Kilkenny Castle today

Today Kilkenny Castle stands as an example of several phases of development in Irish architectural styles ranging from the stone built, moated Norman fortress on a commanding site through later styles incorporated in the buildings, including the impressive seventeenth-century Classical gateway.

The eighteenth century saw the building of the elegant, crescent shaped stables and the nineteenth-century rebuilding and remodelling introduced the Castellated Baronial style with additional Ruskinian Gothic motifs.

The final phase of the latest conservation and rebuilding process carried out by architects of the Office of Public Works is evident in the modern conference centre housed within the medieval fabric of the Parade Tower.
