This  Free Pop Up Talk will explore the influence of William Marshall on monastic settlements in Ireland.

William Marshall, like other Norman Lords, founded a number of monastic foundations which was fundamental to the of establishment of his lordship in Kilkenny. It was a way of controlling the estate but also had the added benefit of investing in the afterlife and currying favour with God. It cannot be emphasised enough how intertwined the church and state were during this period. Medieval life was a lottery and stacking the odds in your favour was prudent.
